Is the degree worth the investment? Break-even year calculator with total cost (tuition + opportunity cost) vs salary uplift analysis.
The ROI on higher education depends on three factors: total investment (tuition + opportunity cost), salary uplift post-degree, and how long you remain in the relevant field. Many premium professional degrees (IIM MBA, IIT M.Tech, US MS in CS) have break-even periods of 2–4 years — strong ROI. Degrees without clear career uplift can take 10+ years to break even.
Total cost = tuition + living expenses + salary foregone during study. Salary gain = post-MBA salary minus pre-MBA salary. Payback period = total cost ÷ annual salary gain. An IIM MBA costs ₹25L with ₹12L salary foregone = ₹37L total. Post-MBA salary of ₹28L vs pre-MBA ₹12L = ₹16L gain/yr. Break-even ≈ 2.3 years.
When the expected salary uplift is less than 20–25% of the course cost per year, or when the break-even exceeds 7–10 years. Also avoid if the degree requires a career pivot away from hard-earned domain expertise — the opportunity cost may exceed the degree benefit.
